Think historical novels are something new?

I was born under the Blue Ridge, and under that side which is blue in the evening light, in a wild land of game and forest and rushing waters. There, on the borders of a creek that runs into the Yadkin River, in a cabin that was chinked with red mud, I came into the world a subject of King George the Third, in that part of his realm known as the province of North Carolina.

That is from a 1904 novel by Winston Churchill, a bestselling American novelist, who was 100 years closer to the time of King George than we are today!

[There is a chase to capture a bad guy named Cameron.]

“We’re to scalp the redskins and Cameron . . .”

“Cameron!” shrieked the gentleman. “But that’s the other side, man! Against his Majesty?”

“One side or t’other,” said my father, “’tis all one against Alec Cameron.

” The gentleman looked at my father with something like terror in his eyes. “You’ll never forgive Cameron,” he said.

“I’ll no forgive anybody who does me a wrong,” said my father.

Ahh, a vendetta. As well as the complications of choosing up sides for the coming American Revolution! No wonder this was a popular novel!

Here’s the set-up:

Two years ago, 21-year-old Kate Edwards became deathly ill and slipped into a coma. While unconscious, she crept into the mind of a missing boy and awoke with the knowledge of his location. Friends and family were skeptical and wary of her new ability to see into the minds of others. Their fears prompted Kate to keep her psychic powers a secret. Feeling alienated, she dropped out of college and spent most of her days holed up at her mother’s home.

Now another child has been abducted. Police detective Jared Corbett seeks out Kate for her help in solving the case. Reluctantly, Kate agrees and they must work together to bring 8-year-old Cori Preston home to her family. Although attracted to one another, Jared has a girlfriend with ties to the abduction case and Kate is sarcastic and guarded since her coma. With visions she can’t control and an uncontrollable attraction to the detective, she wonders if she can leave the past behind and finally stop hiding from the world. Otherwise, Cori may be lost forever.

Some of the Characters
Aaron:  Alchemist, mathematician, sorcerer’s apprentice, Aaron is an unpretentious, gifted fifteen year old apprenticed to the great master sorcerer, Elsanar. His daily routine is thrown into disarray when his home is attacked and he is forced to flee for his life.
Shanna:  Shanna is a free-spirited fifteen year old who wants, above all else, freedom from the life of drudgery that awaits her as she enters adulthood. She is given this opportunity when Norwynne is near leveled by an elemental attack.
Ensel Rhe:  A member of the blue-black skinned race known as eslar, Ensel Rhe’s reasons for coming to Norwynne remain as enigmatic as the blood-stained satchel he carries with him everywhere.
Erlek:  Savant, scholar, man of science. He walks as if an elder one moment, then moves with the swiftness of a twenty year old the next. His purpose is both mysterious and diabolical.
What It’s About
Aaron–scholar, alchemist, and sorcerer’s apprentice–wants nothing more than to study his tomes, perform his experiments, and spend time with his closest friend, Shanna. Substitute the occasional romp about the city for the books and plenty of games of crutchit for the smelly alchemicals, and Shanna is just fine with that too.

Their routines–and their lives–are thrown into chaos when an elemental attack is launched against their home. Aaron thinks Shanna killed, while Aaron himself is forced to flee for his life. For Shanna, who survives that fateful night, the greatest adventure of her life is about to begin. Only the worst of nightmares awaits Aaron: pursued by dwarves, hell hounds, and a demon who will not stop until he is dead, the only thing keeping him alive is his own resourcefulness and an eslar mercenary whose reputation as a killer might make him the worst threat of all.

Though Aaron and Shanna travel different paths, their purpose is joined when they individually learn of the mysterious Fifth Element. Shanna sees it as the final piece in the puzzle that is her destiny. To Aaron’s logical mind, it is an impossible ambiguity. Whatever the answer, the Fifth Element draws them back together and into a final confrontation not as allies, but as adversaries.
